Do you believe in soulmates? Why or why not?
I think that people put a lot of emphasis on finding the ONE PERSON, just like they put a lot of pressure on finding the ONE PURPOSE in life. I believe that there can’t be just one for either.
Purpose is daily direction given by one who has a foreshadow of our various destinations.
As for our souls, although we have just one soul, our soul has different reflections at different points in our lives based on the pressures of life and the emotional weight we put on our souls in our different seasons.
Mates are the partners that we form meaningful life connections with in different seasons. They are the ones who we embrace, can relate to, and seamlessly walk in step with (finding much in common) while walking through a certain portion of life together. It can be friends, family, or new connections.
I believe that our false assumption of a lifelong soulmate (in a spouse) causes many divorces (aside from finances). This highlights the perception that a spouse has the pressure of walking seamlessly with us while we transition across the different stages of our lives (sometimes changing drastically both physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually).
Spouses are not meant to be soulmates!
They are meant to be companions that have teamed up for the longhaul to go the distance as we step into purpose and as a help mate to balance life’s necessities and provide support and upliftment as we step into purpose. Like a seesaw there’s more times than not when they go low and you go high and vice versa.
They are not meant to be constantly in step with us!
Sometimes they’ll go before us, sometimes they’ll walk behind us, and sometimes they’ll carry us. They are the vessels the Lord uses to always be alert and inconspicuous, present and hidden, loud and silent, light and heavy.
Sometimes, they can seem empty because we have a lot to unpack and offload. Sometimes, they can seem full and overflowing – especially when we feel low and in lack. Sometimes, they can be in equilibrium, balancing every conversation and situation with ease while remaining poised and calm and being the best passenger seat driver ever.
The bible doesn’t talk about soulmates; instead, it talks about a redeemer.
While we can experience temporary and seasonal soulmate bonds, there is no comparison with Christ, who was meant to be a complete fulfillment and permanent inherent bond to every season and change in our lives. No matter who we were, who we are, and who we will become, Christ, the redeemer is the only soulmate that can not be realistically accomplished by anyone else.
Be blessed,
G.M.
